Le Pas des
Aigles is situated in
a very peaceful, rural setting and a 20 minute walk from the village of
Saugon, with butcher, baker, grocer, café and church. Saugon
is an ideal all year
round base for touring the southwest of France. It is within easy driving
distance of the superb Atlantic coast as well as being convenient for
the cities of Bordeaux and Cognac and their surrounding vineyards -
Blaye, Bourg, Médoc and St Emilion. The prestigious styles of
wines are copied around the world - not always successfully! The
nearest large town is Blaye (15 kms away) which is situated on the
Gironde estuary. It has a famous citadel, hypermarket, numerous
restaurants and a daily car ferry to the Médoc. In the heart of
one of France's main wine producing regions there are literally hundreds
of local châteaux, the nearest being 1km away. Bordeaux is easily
accessible by car or train (nearest railway station 11kms) and it
is well worth a visit. It has something for everyone, from
designer shops to historic buildings, parks and restaurants. There
is a new riverside walkway which takes you along the rejuvenated banks of the
Garonne, which is traffic free and safe for kids. The efficient
new tram system whisks you from the excellent value 'park and ride'
just off the motorway right to the centre of the action.
The Atlantic beaches include the 'surfer's paradise' at Carcans and Lacanau in the Medoc or the seafood and dunes of Arcachon, to the west of Bordeaux. To the north are the sandy beaches of St-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan (the capital of the Cote de Beauté), a little town with a busy, working harbour and marina. Bordeaux International airport is only a 45 minutes drive away and the Atlantic beaches are one hour away. |

| Blaye | ||||
|
The historic town of Blaye is a 15 minute drive from Saugon. Blaye is famous for two things - it's citadel which overlooks the Gironde and it's wine, the "Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux"- red, white and rosé wines of Bordeaux from the right bank of the estuary. Blaye already had an economic and an important strategic position in the gallo-Roman time but it was during the reign of Louis XIV, with the construction in 1689 of the citadel by military engineer Vauban, that it became what it is today. The citadel of Blaye, its city walls, the Fort Paté and the Fort Médoc were listed in 2008 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as part of the "Fortifications Of Vauban" group. The citadel of Blaye has a spectacular view over the Gironde estuary. You can get a feel of the town by strolling through the streets and you will get a full appreciation of its position, overlooking the Gironde, by walking around the walls. An orientation table is located on the top of the keep. There is a wide panoramic view of the estuary overlooking the sea, the eastern part of the citadel and the Porte Royale. Town of Blaye hosts a wonderful market every Saturday and Wednesday, the biggest in the area. There is also a car ferry (BAC) from the town to the other side of the Gironde Estuary, home to the famous Medoc wines and great surfing.
